The Evil Queen
Evil Queen, Once Upon A Time
Cosplayer - Cavalyn Galano
Photography by Nate Buchman Photography
This shoot was planned about 2 months ago. I had been wanting to work with Cavalyn since we first got reacquainted last year (we both attended Salem State College for a short while wherein we took Intro to Theatre together) and I discovered her exceptional design skills both in fashion and in costuming.. She’s a powerhouse of design. I will even go on record as saying I know of very few who I’d consider her equal in costuming. Her attention to detail alone is unequal to these eyes which I would only say that to a handful of people I’ve met in my life. So yes, I wanted to work with her quite badly.
Going back to 2 months ago I got in touch with her about photographing her Evil Queen costume from Once Upon A Time. We had a location in mind, a gorgeous vineyard with vast openness with grand elegent architectural elements, but it never happened. We both had personal or work issues that conflicted with the photo taking place. It reached a point where she suggested delaying the shoot until next year which my stubbornness and refusal to give in said otherwise. I suggested we could meet at a local con, Super MegaFest, get the photo of her in the costume and I later on would find the background and work out the kinks during the editing process. That ended up being the gameplan. In the comments below I’ll drop in the original photo I took of her to give you context as to crazy my idea turned out haha.
Now, fun fact about what inspired the image is that I took inspiration from a different villain entirely, Maleficent. Kept remembering how in Sleeping Beauty the character had been portrayed, the moody atmosphere about her, the malicious intend. I wanted that, all of it.
Quite proud of this image. Going to use this as a stepping stone for how I approach portraits in the coming months.
